My wife loves the beach and she wanted to decorate our downstairs bathroom in a beach theme. She was inspired by a local soap shop that decorated their wall with starfish against a light blue painted wall. We tried to match the paint as closely as we could, and then we started adding decorations and accessories. First, we needed something to go above the toilet. I found plans by Ana White for little crates that we thought would be perfect for our beach theme.
I altered her plans a little. I changed the dimensions to 12 x 11 1/4, and I did not use lath sticks for the crate slates because I wanted something sturdier. I had some left over 2×12 wood from my entertainment center and my entryway bench, so I cut off 3/4 in wide pieces to make the crate slates. It was difficult to cut these and I had a number that split, but I really like the look of the cut slates. The wood grain gives character to the crates and makes it look more weathered.
To decorate the crates, we used shells we found at the beach and a few shells and starfish we bought at a local beach shop. We also included some other decorations we had saved for our beach themed bathroom. We continue to add shells to the crates as we find them at the beach.
Next week I will show how I made the starfish wall decorations.
