My church uses a children’s program called Awana. Every year our Awana club has a Grand Prix (think pinewood derby), and my kids need cars. Last year, for the first time I made my kids’ cars. My son wanted a Lego minifigure car, and my daughter wanted a car that looked like a crown. I don’t have any pictures of my daughter’s car because it has fallen apart, but here is the Lego minifigure car.
The head is made of pvc pipes that I attached to the block of wood, and the arms are made out of dowels. I didn’t have a band saw, so I cut the wood with a jigsaw and used a Dremel to make some of the details. Unfortunately, the car was so heavy that it was disqualified from the racing competition, but it finished 2nd place in design.
A few weeks ago, we bought our wood blocks to make our cars for this year.
My son wants a shark car, and my daughter wants a bacon car. I’m not sure how they will turn out, but I’ll post what I come up with.
Have you made a derby car? If so, how did you design it?
