In DIY Crafts

My church uses a children’s program called Awana.  Every year our Awana club has a Grand Prix (think pinewood derby), and my kids need cars.  Last year, for the first time I made my kids’ cars.  My son wanted a Lego minifigure car, and my daughter wanted a car that looked like a crown.  I don’t have any pictures of my daughter’s car because it has fallen apart, but here is the Lego minifigure car.

Lego Minifigure Grand Prix / Pinewood Derby CarThe head is made of pvc pipes that I attached to the block of wood, and the arms are made out of dowels.  I didn’t have a band saw, so I cut the wood with a jigsaw and used a Dremel to make some of the details.  Unfortunately, the car was so heavy that it was disqualified from the racing competition, but it finished 2nd place in design.Lego Minifigure Grand Prix / Pinewood Derby Car

A few weeks ago, we bought our wood blocks to make our cars for this year.

My son wants a shark car, and my daughter wants a bacon car.  I’m not sure how they will turn out, but I’ll post what I come up with.

Have you made a derby car?  If so, how did you design it?
