I believe that almost everything is better when built. Whenever we need a new piece of furniture or home accent piece, I do not think of what to buy, instead I think what will I build, upcycle, or refurbish. So far I have built two beds, almost everything in my master bedroom (bed, nightstands, bookcase, TV console, desk, shelves, lamps, and storage bench), our dining table, our living room entertainment center, etc. . . . Every room in my house has something I built. My goal is one day to build, upcycle, or refurbish every piece of furniture in my house. You may be able to tell I love DIY. Not only do I love DIY, but I think you should love DIY too.
Here are my top five reasons why I love DIY:
Who doesn’t like saving money? DIY will save you a ton of money. I have literally saved thousands of dollars by building furniture and home accent pieces myself instead of buying them. I am not exaggerating. Even if I don’t save money on a particular project, the reasons listed below still make DIY worthwhile.
Custom furniture is expensive, putting it out of reach for most people. That means many people are left to try to find affordable pieces of furniture that will fit their home. This can be a challenge, especially if the space is small or unusual. The cheapest way to get custom furniture is to build it yourself.
Most affordable furniture today is cheaply made. It is hard to find furniture made from solid wood that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. The problem with cheap furniture is that it is usually made with particle board which simply does not hold up well over time. Building your own furniture allows you to build solid wood pieces that will last for a long, long time.
4. Giving to Others
Building furniture and home accent pieces is a wonderful way to give to others. The last two Christmases I made gifts by hand for members of my family. Also, my wife asked me to make gifts to give out to the women in our church who lead our women’s ministry. I made a crate for the library where my wife teaches and my kids go to school. I also have a project on my list to make a table for my church’s food pantry ministry.
5. Having Fun
DIY is a blast. I have so much fun building furniture. I get excited every time I start a new project. I love designing projects and seeing projects come to life. DIY is a lot of fun, and I am so glad I started building furniture a few years ago.
DIY is awesome, and I love it. I hope you will love it too.
